Elon Musk accuses Justin Trudeau of ‘crushing free speech’
text_fieldsOttawa: Elon Musk came down on Justin Trudeau government in Canada after the country tightened its ‘regulatory controls’ on streaming services requiring registration with the government.
SpaceX founder and CEO alleged that Trudeau government is ‘ crushing free speech’ in the country.
His criticism came after journalist and author Glenn Greenwald responded to the government’s recent order that makes the registration compulsory.
‘The Canadian government, armed with one of the world's most repressive online censorship schemes, announces that all "online streaming services that offer podcasts" must formally register with the government to permit regulatory controls,’ Glenn Greenwald posted on X.
Shortly later Musk said ‘Trudeau is trying to crush free speech in Canada. Shameful.’
Another instance of Trudeau government facing criticism over denying free speech was in February 2022 when it invoked emergency powers to respond to truckers protesting against vaccine mandates.
Never before in the history of the nation had a government invoked emergency powers to arm itself to respond to a protest.
However, the government is largely seen as going easy on Khalistan activists allowing their vandalisation of Hindu temples and Indian consulate happen under the garb of free speech.
The Canadian prime minister found himself in trouble after he accused India of having involvement in the murder of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.
India quickly rejected his charges terming them ‘absurd and motivated’ alongside asking for evidence to support his claim.
India went on suspending visa services in Canada and issued an advisory for Indian citizens travelling to Canada to exercise "utmost caution in view of growing anti-India activities and politically-condoned hate crimes and criminal violence".
