Taipei, Taiwan: Taiwanese contract manufacturer Foxconn will build a factory in India to make the wireless earphones for Apple Inc, Reuters reported.

The world's largest contract electronics maker will invest more than $200 million for the upcoming plant in Telangana after it was reportedly requested so by Apple.

The upcoming factory signals at Apple’s decision to shift its base from China to India following Covid crisis in the nation.

The news agency Reuters quoted internal sources in the Foxconn as saying that the Taiwanese company debated for month unable to decide Apple’s offer for AirPod manufacturing.

Foxconn baulked at accepting the offer because of the relatively lower profit margins on making the device, Reuters reported.

Foxconn, who is the assembler of around 70% of all iPhones, will become an AirPod supplier for the first time, while Air Pods are being currently made by several Chinese suppliers.

The construction of production plant in Telangana will start later this year and will go operational by the end of 2024.

Foxconn is competing with rivals like Wistron Corp and Pegatron Corp for more orders from Apple.

The company will reportedly increase investment outside China to reduce its reliance on China for production and meeting customer demand.
