Anthropic launches feature allowing Claude to control computers and complete tasks

Anthropic has introduced a new feature that enables its AI chatbot Claude to control users’ computers and carry out tasks autonomously.

The capability, called Computer Use, is currently available as a research preview through Claude Cowork and Claude Code. It allows the chatbot to interact with desktop environments using a virtual mouse and keyboard, while also reading on-screen content through screenshots.

The feature builds on Anthropic’s earlier Dispatch tool, which lets users remotely control Claude on their devices. With Computer Use, Claude can now perform actions independently, including opening applications, navigating browsers, and working with productivity tools such as documents and spreadsheets.

According to the company, Claude first attempts to complete tasks using connected apps like Slack and Calendar. If no integration is available, it seeks user permission to access legacy applications directly on the computer.

Felix Rieseberg said the feature could become more powerful when combined with Dispatch, allowing users to both control Claude remotely and let it handle complex workflows. He noted that the current version is slower than human operation, as the technology is still in its early stages.

Anthropic said future updates are expected to improve the speed and expand the range of tasks the system can handle.
