AIIMS Delhi installs first robotic surgery training center in a government medical college
text_fieldsNew Delhi: AIIMS New Delhi has installed the da Vinci Surgical robot, developed by US-based Intuitive, to strengthen training in robotic-assisted surgery for surgeons and care teams.
This marks the first da Vinci RAS (robotic-assisted surgery) training facility in a government medical college in India. The move follows a Memorandum of Understanding signed last year between AIIMS and Intuitive to create an advanced training center at the institute.
The robot has been installed at AIIMS’ Skills, Education and Training (SET) facility and will be used to train surgeons across key specialties such as urology, gynaecology and general surgery. The collaboration aims to expand access to structured, high-quality training in robotic-assisted surgery within a government setup.
“With this training center, AIIMS Delhi is reinforcing its leadership in advancing surgical education and innovation. The demand for precision-driven technologies like robotic-assisted surgery is growing in India. By equipping surgeons for performing surgeries on advanced robotic technologies, this center will help improve surgical precision, reduce recovery times, and elevate patient care across the country,” said Dr M. Srinivas, Director of AIIMS Delhi.
Rohitt Mahajan, Vice President and General Manager of Intuitive India, said the facility was a major step towards building India’s surgical robotics ecosystem. “By collaborating with a premier academic institute like AIIMS Delhi, we are enabling access for surgeons and residents to train on the da Vinci platform and ecosystem,” he added.
The center will follow a structured step-by-step pathway, allowing trainees to progress from assisting in procedures to supervised hands-on practice. AIIMS has developed training protocols to ensure consistency, quality and safety in skill development.
