Olympics: India gets first medal, Weightlifter Mirabai Chanu wins Silver

Tokyo: India gets its first medal in Tokyo Olympics 2020 as Weightlifter Mirabai Chanu has won silver medal in the women's 49kg category while China's Zhihu Hou took gold. Chanu lifted 84kg and 87kg successfully but failed to lift 89kg as she was placed in second spot after snatch while China's Zhihu lifted 94kg to create an Olympic record.

New Olympic record was registered by Mirabai Chanu with a successful lift of 115kg in clean and jerk. In shooting. India's Saurabh Chaudhary reached the final of the 10m air pistol men's event as he topped the qualification round with emphatic scores of 95, 98, 98, 100, 98 and 97. Abhishek Verma failed to make the cut as he finished 17th with scores of 94, 96, 98, 97, 98 and 92.

On the medal front, Yang Qian set an Olympic record of 251.8 in women's 10m air rifle shooting to win China's first gold medal in Tokyo Olympics. Russia's Anastasiia Galashina won silver while Switzerland's Nina Christen won the first bronze medal of Tokyo 2020. Indian shooters, however, disappointed as Elavenil Valarivan finished at 16th (626.5) while Apurvi Chandela finished 36th (621.9) after six series of 10 shots and therefore failed to qualify in the 10m air rifle women's qualification round (only top 8 qualified).

In table tennis, India's Sharath Kamal and Manika Batra lost in straight games 11-8 11-6 11-5 11-4 against the Chinese Taipei pair of Yun Ju Lin and Ching I Cheng in their Round of 16 clash in the mixed doubles event. In men's hockey, India beat New Zealand 3-2 in the Pool A match through goals from Rupinder Pal Singh and two from Harmanpreet Singh as they recovered from a bad start early in the game. Indian women's hockey team will also be kick-starting their campaign on Day 2.

In Archery, India's Deepika Kumari and Pravin Jadhav beat Chinese Taipei's Chih-Chun Tang and Chia-En Lin in a thriller (set points 5-3) to reach quarterfinal in the mixed team event. Meanwhile, badminton player Sai Praneeth lost to Misha Ziberman of Israel in the Men's Singles Group Stage (Group D).
