Nethra Kumanan wins bronze in women’s dinghy at Asian Games

India’s Nethra Kumanan won the bronze medal in the women’s dinghy event at the Asian Games sailing competition on Friday.

The 29-year-old Olympian from Chennai finished with 14 points, including seven from the final races and seven from the qualification races. Thailand’s Sophia Montgomery won gold with five points, while Singapore’s Jania Ang took silver with 13.

In sailing, points are based on finishing positions in each race, with one point awarded for first place. The competitor with the lowest overall score wins the regatta.

Kumanan won one of her final two races and finished sixth in the other.

In the men’s event, India’s Vishnu Saravanan finished fourth despite placing second in both of his final races. He had accumulated 17 points in the qualification races, taking his overall total to 21.

South Korea’s Jeemin Haa won the men’s gold with nine points, while Hong Kong, China’s Nicholas Halliday took silver with 11 points. Malaysia’s Mohd Khairulnizam finished third with 14 points.

India also won two medals in the sailing events on Thursday. Manu Francis and Kurisinkal Noble claimed silver in the men’s skiff competition, while Harshita Tomar and Shital Verma won bronze in the women’s skiff event.
