India lose 2-4 to England, face must-win Hockey World Cup clash against Pakistan
text_fieldsIndia suffered a 2-4 defeat to higher-ranked England in their second Pool D match of the Men’s Hockey World Cup on Monday, leaving their qualification hopes dependent on the final group game against Pakistan.
Nicholas Bandurak put England ahead in the 13th minute, but India responded strongly. Captain Harmanpreet Singh equalised in the 16th minute before Dilpreet Singh gave India a 2-1 lead in the 24th minute.
England took control after half-time, scoring three times to turn the match around. Stuart Rushmere equalised in the 38th minute, while Henry Croft put England ahead in the 42nd minute.
Bandurak then scored his second goal of the match in the 54th minute to complete England’s 4-2 victory.
India now has three points from two matches. They had opened their campaign with a 3-1 victory over Wales on Saturday.
India will face Pakistan in their final Pool D match on Wednesday. Pakistan has one point from two games.
India need to beat or draw against Pakistan to qualify for the second round. A defeat would eliminate India from the tournament.
