Indian football icon Sunil Chhetri is on the brink of reaching a significant milestone in his illustrious career as he prepares to earn his 150th international cap during the World Cup qualifier against Afghanistan in Guwahati.

Chhetri, who made his senior debut nearly two decades ago against Pakistan, will mark a remarkable achievement by becoming the 40th player worldwide to reach the milestone of 150 or more international appearances, a list currently spearheaded by Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo.

The upcoming match against Afghanistan follows India's goalless draw in the away leg contest, propelling them to second place in Group A of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

Having made his debut on June 12, 2005, in a friendly encounter against Pakistan, Chhetri immediately showcased his prowess by scoring in the 1-1 draw. Since then, he has amassed 149 appearances for the national team, establishing himself as a prolific goal-scorer with a record 93 goals to his name.

A testament to his consistency and impact on the field, Chhetri holds the unique record of scoring in his first, 25th, 50th, 75th, 100th, and 125th international matches for the Blue Tigers.

AIFF president Kalyan Chaubey hailed Chhetri's impending milestone, describing it as an "extraordinary accomplishment" that contributes to the elevation of Indian football on the global stage.

Chaubey remarked, "Chhetri playing his 150th international match is an extraordinary accomplishment that will go a long way in keeping the Indian football flag flying high. He has been a great influencer who has motivated millions to play this beautiful game."

In recognition of Chhetri's remarkable feat, the AIFF announced plans to felicitate him during the return leg clash against Afghanistan in Guwahati.

AIFF acting secretary general M Satyanarayan expressed the organization's pride in honoring Chhetri for his invaluable contributions to Indian football, stating, "The All India Football Federation is proud to felicitate him on his 150th international match. We sincerely hope Chhetri will continue to serve Indian football in the same breath in the future."
