New Delhi: Japan’s head coach Hajime Moriyasu grabbed headlines at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Dallas by using a handheld whiteboard to signal instructions to his players during their match against the Netherlands.

Viral clips showed Moriyasu holding up the board with large numerals — counting down from three to one — to convey messages visually amid the din of a 69,285 strong crowd. The tactic appeared to inject urgency into Japan’s play as they chased a late goal; Japan hauled themselves back to snatch a 2-2 draw with an 88th minute equaliser after twice falling behind.

The low tech move prompted widespread comment on social media, with many users praising the clarity of a visual cue in a noisy stadium. “It's very smart. Why would he shout so much in a crowded and noisy stadium while something visual is much more appealing and clear?” one fan wrote. Others called the display “performative” or applauded the team’s ingenuity.

Some supporters set about decoding the numbers, suggesting each digit stood for a prearranged tactical instruction. “This is the instruction code. Each number represents a specific plan and tactic,” one user posted, arguing that Japan approaches the game as a study as much as a sport. Another attempted a tongue in cheek interpretation, claiming certain numbers indicated specific set play actions.

Whether the board carried a complex coded system or a simple spur on for the players, Moriyasu’s whiteboard moment became one of the match’s talking points.
