FIFA WC: Uruguay escape Saudi Arabia shock with late Araujo equaliser
text_fieldsMiami: Uruguay were held to a 1-1 draw by Saudi Arabia in their opening Group H match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup at Miami Stadium. Maxi Araujo scored 10 minutes from time to rescue a point after Saudi Arabia had taken a first-half lead through Abdulelah Alamri, Reuters reported.
Uruguay created the better chances early on, but Saudi goalkeeper Mohammed Alowais produced several important saves. Saudi Arabia took the lead in the 41st minute when Alamri converted a rebound after Fernando Muslera had blocked an initial effort from a corner.
Uruguay stepped up the pressure after halftime and nearly equalised when Manuel Ugarte's shot struck the post. Alowais continued to deny the South Americans with a series of saves.
The breakthrough came in the 80th minute. Federico Vinas forced another save with a header, but Araujo reacted quickest to score from the loose ball and level the match.
Uruguay searched for a late winner, but Saudi Arabia held firm to secure a valuable point.
The result leaves Group H wide open after Spain were also held to a goalless draw by World Cup debutants Cape Verde earlier in the day. Saudi Arabia earned an important draw, while Uruguay were left frustrated after failing to convert their chances into victory.
