C.Ronaldo’s exit from national camp: team loses 500k followers
text_fieldsLisbon: Cristiano Ronaldo’s sudden departure from Portugal’s national team camp has triggered controversy, with the team’s official social media accounts reportedly losing nearly 500,000 followers within hours of the development.
The 41-year-old forward’s decision to leave the camp has sparked intense debate in Portugal, with questions mounting about the circumstances of his exit. Ronaldo has indicated that he will reveal the real reasons for his departure at a later stage, adding to speculation surrounding the incident.
The controversy has also spilt into the political sphere. Portuguese Prime Minister Luis Montenegro has reportedly sought a meeting with head coach Jorge Jesus amid the growing debate over the national team.
Public opinion has largely turned against Ronaldo, according to a survey conducted by Portuguese sports newspaper A Bola. The poll found that 78.2% of respondents held Ronaldo responsible for the situation, while 13.7% blamed Jesus and 8.1% pointed to Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proenca.
Ronaldo’s absence has also forced a notable change ahead of Portugal’s Nations League clash against Denmark at Copenhagen’s Parken Stadium. Rafael Leao will wear the No. 7 shirt previously associated with Ronaldo. Nations League regulations require players in the matchday squad to wear numbers from 1 to 23.
Leao, who joined Galatasaray from AC Milan, normally wears No. 17, but that number has been assigned to new arrival Fabio Silva. Francisco Conceicao remains unavailable through injury, while Bruno Fernandes has returned after recovering from his injury.
Portugal currently leads Nations League Group A4 after victories over Wales and Norway, but Ronaldo’s unexpected exit has cast a shadow over the team’s campaign.
