Cristiano Ronaldo declares himself football's GOAT, dismisses debate
text_fieldsFootball: Cristiano Ronaldo has reignited football's greatest-of-all-time debate by asserting his superiority over every other player in history, arguing that his extraordinary goalscoring achievements have not received the recognition they deserve, Hindustan Times reported.
The 41-year-old Portuguese superstar has scored 980 goals in 1,337 professional appearances for clubs and his national team, bringing the unprecedented 1,000-goal milestone within reach. However, Ronaldo maintains that his legacy as football's greatest does not depend on reaching that target.
His record spans some of the world's biggest clubs. He scored 450 goals in 438 appearances for Real Madrid, 146 for Portugal, 145 for Manchester United, 133 for his current club Al Nassr and 101 for Juventus. The numbers underpin his emphatic claim in the ongoing GOAT debate.
Meanwhile, the veteran forward is facing disciplinary trouble with Portugal. The Portuguese Football Federation suspended him after he left the national team's training camp late last month. Ronaldo reportedly accused Portugal coach Jorge Jesus of twice failing to honour promises regarding his playing time.
Ronaldo has apologised to supporters and teammates and accepted the federation's punishment. He is expected to return during the November 2026 international break.
His long-term future remains uncertain. Although he previously indicated that the current season could be his last at Al-Nassr, he has yet to announce his retirement from international football. He has also acknowledged that a loss of motivation could eventually bring his playing career to an end.
For now, Ronaldo remains focused on extending his remarkable scoring record while continuing to stake his claim to football's ultimate individual distinction.
