Birmingham: In Commonwealth Games women's hockey, India beat defending champions New Zealand 2-1 in the shootout and won the bronze medal, finishing their successful campaign in the tournament on Sunday, PTI reported.

A 1-0 leading India allowed New Zealand to earn a penalty corner just 30 seconds before the final whistle, and the latter cashed it to score the equalizer. Olivia Merry scored for New Zealand, sending the match to penalty shootouts.

However, Indian women held their nerves throughout the shootout and won the game.

In a controversial semifinal match against Australia, India had lost the game but was determined to win the match for bronze. India registered the lead before halftime, thanks to Salima Tete.-

Though Neha Goyal nearly ended up upping the lead after halftime, the strong New Zealand defence did their job well, which India failed to 30 seconds before the end of the game.
