Ahmedabad: Australia secured their sixth Cricket World Cup title in a thrilling final clash against India at the Narendra Modi Stadium.

Travis Head emerged as the hero, steering Australia to a six-wicket victory with an outstanding 137 runs, backed by a solid partnership with Marnus Labuschagne (58 not out), reported The Indian Express.

In a stadium packed with fervent Indian supporters, Australia faced an early setback, finding themselves at 47-3 after seven overs. However, Head and Labuschagne showcased remarkable resilience, crafting a formidable 192-run partnership to chase down the target of 241.

India, dominating the tournament until the final, posted a modest 240 all out in their innings. Despite half-centuries from Virat Kohli (54) and Lokesh Rahul (66), the slow pitch limited India's scoring potential.

The match witnessed a rollercoaster of moments, starting with Pat Cummins' unconventional decision to field after winning the toss. Australia's bowlers, aided by exceptional fielding, restricted India's batting lineup, setting the stage for their pursuit of the target.

The Australian team faced a stumbling start, losing key wickets to Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami, but Head's remarkable innings turned the tide. Labuschagne's steady contribution supported Head's aggressive play, guiding Australia to victory with seven overs to spare.

Reflecting on the triumph, the Australian team expressed their elation and praised Head's exceptional performance. Mitchell Starc hailed Cummins' phenomenal leadership throughout the tournament, acknowledging the team's outstanding eight-week journey to clinch the World Cup in India.

Steve Smith emphasised the team's resilience and belief, citing the exceptional effort by the bowlers and fielders that set the tone for their victory. David Warner credited the bowlers for their fantastic start and highlighted the nerves in the dressing room before the pivotal partnership between Head and Labuschagne.

Josh Hazlewood regarded the victory as monumental, surpassing their 2015 World Cup triumph, acknowledging the electric atmosphere created by passionate Indian fans.

Glenn Maxwell expressed his excitement and praised Head's batting prowess, while Labuschagne expressed disbelief at the team's remarkable achievement, highlighting their unexpected journey from not being part of the one-day team months ago.
