India beat NZ by 70 runs to enter WC final; Shami scripts history with 7-wicket haul

Mumbai: In the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 semifinal at the Wankhede Stadium, India secured a 70-run victory against New Zealand, powered by Virat Kohli's world record 50th ODI hundred, a stellar century from Shreyas Iyer, and a seven-wicket haul by pacer Mohammed Shami, who was on a record-breaking spree.
Pacer Mohammed Shami took seven wickets, conceding 57 runs, recording the best bowling figures for India in One Day International (ODI) World Cup history and moving to the top of the wicket-takers list in the ongoing ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023.
He also became the fastest bowler to take 50 wickets in ODI World Cup history. Shami’s performance helped India reach their fourth ODI World Cup final.
He overshadowed Stuart Binny’s six-wicket haul against Bangladesh in 2014 to register the best-ever bowling figures by an Indian in ODIs.
With this, Shami also joined an exclusive club of just five players to claim a seven-wicket haul in ODI World Cups. Only Glenn McGrath, Andy Bichel, Tim Southee and Winston Davis have picked seven-wicket hauls in ODI World Cups.
Shami surpassed Zaheer Khan to take the most wickets for India in a single edition of the ODI World Cup. Zaheer Khan held that record for 12 runs.
Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer slammed their respective centuries to take India towards the high score of 397/4 after 50 overs. Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, and KL Rahul also shined in India's high-scoring batting campaign.
Shami got India off to a flyer in their 398-run defence by dismissing Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra. He then sent Williamson back to the pavilion before catching Tom Latham LBW just two balls later.
Shami then dismissed Mitchell before picking the wicket of Mitchell Santner, followed by that of Tim Southee and Lockie Ferguson to bundle the Kiwis for 327 runs in 48.5 overs.
India now awaits the winner of South Africa’s clash with 5-time champions Australia in the second semi-final in Kolkata. The final is scheduled to be played at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday, November 19.
