New Delhi: India is in the driving seat in the second Test against West Indies as they declared their first innings at 518/2 and West Indies, the visitors, were 140/4 at stumps on Day 2, Saturday. Windies trails by 378 runs. Indian skipper Shubman Gill's century took India past 500 on the second day. Gill remained unbeaten on 129 runs off 196 balls, which included two sixes and 16 fours.

This is Gill's fifth Test century since taking over as captain, and all five centuries were scored in 2025. Gill is only the second Indian captain to score five Test centuries in a calendar year after Virat Kohli achieved the feat in 2017 and 2018. However, Gill holds the record for achieving it from the minimum number of innings after achieving the feat from just 12 innings.

Kohli took 18 innings for the same.

In 1997, the legendary Sachin Tendulkar scored four centuries as captain.

Gill is the third fastest in the world with five calender test centuries from 12 innings and second among Indian batters. Alastair Cook (nine innings) and Sunil Gavaskar (10 innings) are in the first and second positions.

Since becoming the Indian Test captain, the player has scored 933 runs and averages 84.

Resuming from 318/2 on Day 2, India added 200 runs before pulling the plug on their innings. Apart from Gill and Jaiswal, contributions from Dhruv Jurel, B Sai Sudharsan (87) and Nitish Kumar Reddy (43) ensured India maintained momentum throughout their batting innings. The day began with a heartbreak for India as Jaiswal’s bid for a third Test double hundred ended in a weird run-out on the second over.

The declaration came just after Jurel was castled by West Indies skipper Roston Chase for 44, as India felt powered to 518.
