Mumbai: A 52-year-old man playing cricket at Dadkar Maidan in Matunga died after a ball struck on his head on Monday.

The ball flying in from the nearby pitch hit his head as he was fielding with his back towards the batter.

The man couldn't see the ball being hit towards him from the adjacent pitch.

Struck behind the ear, he was rushed to the hospital where he was declared dead.

‘He fell down and was rushed to hospital, where he was declared dead,’ The Times of India quoted an eyewitness as saying.

The two matches were underway at the time as part of the Kutchhi Visa Oswal Vikas Legend Cup tournament for those aged 50 or more.

The authorities were managing two matches at the same time owing to space crunch.

Though players previously got injured from another match, this is reportedly the first fatal accident.

Police ruled out any intentional attempt to hit the person, according to the report.
