Cricket tournament with Sanskrit commentary begins in Bhopal

New Delhi: The rhythmic chanting that wafts down on the stadium is not any Vedic mantras but cricket commentary.
Pundits are belting out about scores like sixes and fours and several twos that come in between as players hit it out left and right.
The cricket tournament for ‘Maharishi Cup’ underway at the Ankur ground in Bhopal is known for its all-Sankrit interaction between players, not to mention umpiring and the commentary.
'Maharshi Cup' is being held for Vedic pandits to mark the birth anniversary of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi who is credited with popularising transcendental meditation in the West.
The four-day tournament began on Thursday saw 22 Vedic pandits wearing traditional dhoti and kurtas hitting the cricket pitch.
The third year of the Maharshi Cup is organized to promote ancient Sanskrit language and sportsmanship among the Vedic family.
Teams from several Vedic institutions are participating in the four-day tournament.
Winning teams will walk away with cash prizes and compendium of Vedic books alongside a 100-year alamanac, according to PTI.
