Kolkata: In a gripping semi-final at the Eden Gardens, Australia secured their spot in the 2023 Men’s ODI World Cup final by edging past South Africa with a three-wicket victory.

Travis Head led the charge with a top score of 62, well supported by Steven Smith, Josh Inglis, Mitchell Starc, and captain Pat Cummins, thwarting a resilient challenge from the South African team.

Despite South Africa's spinners posing significant challenges, Australia managed to navigate through the innings, denying the South African bowlers the breakthroughs they sought. David Miller's valiant century for South Africa wasn't enough to steer them to victory.

Chasing a target of 213, Australia's opening pair, Travis Head and David Warner, started strongly, swiftly accumulating runs.

Although Warner’s aggressive innings were cut short by Aiden Markram's delivery, Head continued his attacking stance, benefitting from chances offered when South African fielders missed catching opportunities. He secured his fifty with aggressive stroke play but also survived a few scares, providing Australia the necessary impetus.

The middle order saw a few tense moments, with batsmen like Marnus Labuschagne and Glenn Maxwell surviving close calls before eventually losing their wickets to South Africa’s spinners. However, contributions from Smith, Inglis, and Starc proved vital in steering Australia closer to the target.

South Africa put up a relentless fight, attempting to create chances through their bowlers but failed to capitalise on crucial moments. Despite some tense situations, Australia held their nerve, eventually securing the win in the 47th over of the match.

With this victory, Australia sets the stage for a World Cup final showdown against India, reviving the intensity of the 2003 championship match. The semi-final encounter showcased a gripping contest between bat and ball, culminating in Australia's eighth appearance in the Men’s ODI World Cup final.
