Budapest: Twelve-year-old Abhimanyu Mishra becomes the youngest chess grandmaster (GM) in history here on Wednesday, reports NDTV.

Mishra, who had already crossed the required 2500 Elo points, scored his third GM norm here. An official statement on Chess.com said that Mishra won the biggest game of his career so far. He defeated the 15-year-old Indian GM Leon Luke Mendonca with black pieces and secured a performance rating higher than 2600 over nine rounds.

On August 12 2002, GM Sergey Karjakin, a world championship challenger in 2016, made a record age of 12 years and seven months. Mishra had broken that record that stood for 19 years with his age of 12 years, four months and 25 days to become a GM.

Mishra was staying for months in Budapest, playing back to back games in his pursuit for the record. He had scored both his first and second norms for GM here at the Vezerkepzo tournament in April and First Saturday tournament in May, respectively. He is now invited to FIDE World Cup in Sochi.
