Cong questions double standard in registering COVID rule breach case in Kerala

Thiruvananthapuram: The Congress party in Kerala questioned the double standard adopted by the police of registering cases for the violation of COVID protocol. The Kerala police registered a case against the Congress party members for gathering at its party headquarters in Thiruvananthapuram to receive the party's new state chief K Sudhakaran on Wednesday.

Hundreds of party workers reportedly assembled in the charge taking ceremony of the party's new president held in the headquarters.

Leader of Opposition V.D. Satheesan expressed his displeasure and told that there cannot be two sets of rules for cases being registered for violating Covid protocols.

He added that the party had tried its best to keep away the supporters who came to take part in the function. "We even closed the gates of our party office. We did our best to observe the Covid protocols," said Satheesan.

Incidentally, there was a sizeable presence of party workers and supporters at the taking over ceremony held at the auditorium of the headquarters.

Earlier, the police had told the party to hold the event while strictly complying with COVID-19 protocol. However, Congress supporters turned up in huge numbers while shouting slogans to welcome the new KPCC chief.

The police said that social distancing norms were also not followed by the party workers, who surrounded the party office.

But Satheesan expressed surprise and wanted to find out if there are two sets of rules, one for the Congress and another for the CPI-M.

Satheeshan raised questions on whether a case registered at the funeral of a CPI-M leader P.K. Kunjuananthan where 3,000 people took part in June last year.

He further took note of the covid protocol violation during the second Pinarayi Vijayan government's oath ceremony.
