Police and assailants stall rehabilitation in Delhi
text_fieldsNew Delhi: Even days after the dreadful violence in Shiv Vihar, many like Aksar still find it hard to piece their lives together.
His bakery escaped attacks after his Hindu neighbour had stepped in to protect it. Where forty other bakeries got gutted, only a few like Aksar’s survived.
His bakery remains standing, because the Hindu house near the masjid had not come under attack.
Police took in custody people returning to their vandalized homes, says Sahid from the neigbhourhood.
Many returned to homes in the day thinking that Delhi government officials were visiting homes for surveys.
Officials collected filled up forms but many who ran away far afield couldn’t make it.
Nadim Khan of United Against Hate also said that police arrested returnees as wells as activists who helped victims.
Police filed cases against those who had taken refuge in Tahir Hussain’s house during the violence, and arrested 27 so far.
Nadim Khan alleged that many of those arrested had been tortured for three days in custody.
