Supreme Court seeks J&K Administration’s response on Mufti’s detention
text_fieldsNew Delhi: The Supreme Court on Wednesday sought response of the Jammu and Kashmir Administration on Iltija Mufti's petition challenging the detention of her mother and former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti under the J&K PSA.
The Public Safety Act (PSA) has been slapped on former Chief Ministers Farooq Abdullah, Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti. The PSA allows detention upto two years without a trial.
A three-judge Bench headed by Justice Arun Mishra asked the Jammu and Kashmir Government to file response to Iltija's petition by March 18, the next date of hearing, after her counsel Nitya Ramakrishnan said there were no valid grounds to detain her under the special law.
She has challenged the February 5 detention order issued by the Jammu and Kashmir Administration, contending it violated her mother's rights under Articles 14 and 21 of the Constitution. She also contended that her mother was not part of any violence.
Earlier, the SC had on February 14 issued notice to the Centre and J&K administration on Sara Abdullah Pilot's petition challenging detention of her brother and former J&K CM Omar Abdullah under the Public Safety Act.
