New Delhi: The Government’s Revenue Department on Friday cleared around 3,500 square metres of encroachments to make way for the Rani Jhansi Road flyover.

Additional District Magistrate (Central) Rajanish Singh said that about 150 residential, commercial and mixed use buildings were demolished near Azad Market Chowk on an area of 3,429.84 sq. m. The demolition drive was conducted from Wednesday to Friday on the land that was acquired in 2012.

“We did not use force as we were able to convince the residents,” said Singh. He added that 1,233 sq. m of land at Model Basti, the last remaining hurdle, will be cleared of encroachments on September 1 and 2.

“The affected people will be offered land by the North Delhi Municipal Corporation at Model Town. We have already deposited a compensation amount with the court as no one came forward with their documents to claim it,” said Singh.

The flyover that has taken over a decade in the making, will be constructed by the North Corporation and is expected to ease the traffic situation in the area considerably.
