US launches new strikes in Iran, shoots down drones near Hormuz

The US military carried out fresh overnight strikes in Iran targeting a military site that American officials believed posed a threat to US forces and commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, a US official told Reuters on Wednesday.
The official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the US military also intercepted and shot down multiple Iranian drones that were considered a similar threat.
The strikes took place during ongoing negotiations aimed at ending the three-month conflict that began on February 28 with US and Israeli attacks on Iran. The war has killed thousands and pushed global energy prices sharply higher.
The latest US military action had not been previously reported.
Earlier on Wednesday, US President Donald Trump rejected an Iranian state media report claiming that Iran and Oman would jointly manage shipping through the Strait of Hormuz under a possible peace agreement.
Trump said the strategic waterway would remain open.
The US last carried out what it described as defensive strikes against Iran on Monday. Iran had called those attacks a violation of the fragile ceasefire between the two countries.
According to the US Central Command, Monday’s targets included boats attempting to lay naval mines and missile launch sites believed to threaten American forces.
