The UAE on Thursday presented what was described as the world’s largest artificial intelligence chip at the World Governments Summit, placing the country at the centre of advanced AI computing development.

The chip, which contains four trillion transistors on a single wafer, was introduced by Lt General Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, during a summit session in Dubai.

The semiconductor was jointly developed by Abu Dhabi-based technology group G42 and US-based Cerebras Systems. G42 chief executive Peng Xiao displayed the chip to attendees and outlined its scale and capabilities.

“There are over 4 trillion transistors in this chip. That's 4,000 billion transistors on a single chip”, Xiao said while presenting the wafer.

He compared the new technology with existing processors, saying, “On a single GPU, there are over 100 billion transistors on the largest chip we can possibly produce, because this is the size of an entire wafer made by TSMC".

According to G42, the chip delivers roughly 40 times the transistor capacity of current high-end chips used for artificial intelligence computing.

Xiao said the development addresses the growing computing demands of AI systems.

“Why is this important? Because AI requires a huge amount of computing power. If you think of energy as food to feed AI, then the chip is the heart”, he said.

“This, together with many other chips, are what we put inside our AI factory to get to work, to produce intelligence".

The chip will be used across G42’s planned 5-gigawatt UAE-US AI campus in Abu Dhabi.

“This chip is of great importance”, Sheikh Saif said.

He added that the UAE aims to enable 40 per cent of the world’s population to use artificial intelligence. Sheikh Saif said global confidence in the UAE plays a key role in this ambition, pointing to the country’s approach to data handling.

He said the UAE treats the data of nations and companies in the same manner as diplomatic missions protected by law, adding that without trust, progress in artificial intelligence would not be possible.
