UAE health authorities have wiped out 409 sites where dengue-causing mosquitoes were detected following heavy rainfall that flooded several neighbourhoods. Dengue fever, transmitted by Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, prompted significant concern amid stagnant water accumulation.

Abdul Rahman bin Mohamed Al Owais, Minister of Health and Prevention, disclosed the extensive measures taken to combat dengue fever during a Federal National Council (FNC) session. Cutting-edge GPS technologies were employed to map and eradicate mosquito breeding grounds nationwide.

Nine specialized teams from Emirates Health Services strengthened the anti-dengue efforts across the northern emirates. Additionally, an insect laboratory was established to assess mosquito samples and test the efficacy of pesticides. Collaborative efforts with the Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Safety Authority involved over 1,200 mosquito surveys and the analysis of 309 DNA samples.

Comprehensive health education initiatives, delivered in Arabic and English, utilized visual aids to educate the public on preventive practices. The Ministry of Climate Change and Environment urged residents to report mosquito sightings, employing GIS mapping, sensors, predictive modelling and big data analytics to curb mosquito proliferation.

Othaibah Saeed Al Qaydi, director of the Municipal Affairs Department, emphasized the importance of using mosquito repellents and protective clothing. Measures such as installing anti-mosquito screens and nets were encouraged.

Efforts to enhance healthcare workers' skills and improve dengue surveillance included raising awareness about diagnosing dengue without travel history and ensuring immediate electronic case reporting. Epidemiological teams swiftly investigate cases and manage contacts to detect further cases promptly.

Health authorities, in coordination with relevant ministries and the municipality, conduct entomological investigations. Rapid response teams target transmitting insects near patients' residences or workplaces.

Diagnosis and treatment adhere to global standards, with necessary diagnostic services and lab tests provided within 24-48 hours. All 134 Emirates Health Services facilities are equipped to treat dengue fever patients.
