London: After taking office as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, the UAE announced its pledges for its second term at the Council for the next two years, Arab News reported, citing Emirates News Agency. The promises include securing peace, promoting inclusion, boosting resilience, triggering more innovations and cooperation with the UN and member states.

Lana Nusseibeh, the UAE permanent representative to the UN, said that the Emirates conduct on the Council reflects their nation and its people who are tolerant, inclusive and believes in the strength in unity. UAE seeks convergence of views from a unified council voice so that its resolutions have comprehensive support, she said. She is looking forward to working with the Security Council, she added.

The UAE has resolved to reinforce its ties with organisations like the Arab League, African Union etc., and it will represent Arab countries at the Council. It will advocate on issues including women's rights, peace and security, climate issues, counterterrorism and Covid-19 response, a statement released by UAE said. UAE will be serving as president of the Council in March and June next year. It will chair standing committees and its agenda.

Apart from UAE, the countries of Albania, Brazil, Gabon and Ghana were also elected to serve as non-permanent members of the UN Security Council for the 2022-23 term.

India, too, is a non-permanent member of the Council for a two-year term, starting from January 2021.
