Laurel River, ridden by Tadhg O’Shea, on way to a stunning win in the Group 1 Dubai World Cup at Meydan

Dubai: A horse named "Laurel River" emerged triumphant in the prestigious Dubai World Cup 2024, held at Meydan Racecourse, clinching a staggering $12 million (AED 44,068,260) prize.

Under the guidance of Irish jockey Tadhg O'Shea and trainer Bhupat Seemar, the six-year-old Laurel River, owned by Prince Khalid bin Abdullah of Saudi Arabia's Juddmonte Farms, dominated the 2,000-meter race. Clocking in at 2:02:31 minutes, Laurel River surged ahead by 8 and a half lengths, outpacing Japanese competitor Ushba Tesoro.

Bhupat Seemar expressed his astonishment, saying, "I'm still coming to terms with what's happened. I think it'll probably sink in another day or two."

The 28th edition of the Dubai World Cup 2024, organized by the Dubai Horse Racing Club, attracted 119 elite horses from 15 countries. With a total prize pool of $30.5 million, the event showcased the pinnacle of international horse racing talent.
