Dubai: The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa) announced Friday that EV charging stations will be installed in paid parking zones across Dubai. This expansion is part of an agreement with Parkin, Dubai's largest supplier of paid public parking facilities.

“By the end of April 2024, the number of EVs in Dubai reached over 30,000,” said Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of Dewa.

“This number is expected to increase in the coming years … The number of registered customers in the EV Green Charger initiative has also increased to over 15,000 by the end of March 2024”, he added.

Parkin highlighted its role in supporting the transition to EVs, stating that its extensive parking network will provide easy access to charging services, thus incentivizing EV adoption.

“Given the time it takes to recharge clean energy vehicles, our parking facilities will play a key role in supporting the … transition to EVs. Our extensive parking network (will) provide easy access to charging services, helping to incentivise EV adoption", said Al Tayer

The company, which operates over 197,000 parking spaces in Dubai, sees the incorporation of EV charging as complementary to its growth strategy.

Since 2015, the EV Green Charger initiative has powered a cumulative electric vehicle distance of approximately 130 million kilometres. Once customers register their EV with the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in Dubai, Dewa creates an EV Green Charger account for them to charge their EV within one hour. Unregistered customers can also use the guest mode feature to charge their EVs.
