Dubai: Dubai Can, a citywide sustainability initiative, has achieved remarkable success in reducing single-use plastic water bottle consumption since its launch in February 2022. Spearheaded by H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, the initiative aims to promote sustainable practices and create an eco-friendly environment in the city.

In just two years, Dubai Can made a significant impact by reducing equivalent to almost 18 million 500ml single-use plastic water bottles.

With the support of partners and sponsors, Dubai Can has strategically placed 50 public water stations across the city, including parks and popular tourist destinations. These stations have dispensed nearly nine million liters of water, providing residents and visitors with a convenient and environmentally friendly alternative to single-use plastic bottles.

Dubai Can aligns with the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, to transform the emirate into a leading sustainable destination. By reducing the use of single-use plastics, the initiative contributes to Dubai's commitment to sustainability and supports the Dubai 2040 Urban Masterplan.

With the UAE's "Year of Sustainability" extended into 2024, Dubai Can has ambitious expansion plans. Thirty additional water fountains are set to be installed by the end of the year, further encouraging residents and visitors to embrace refillable options and adopt sustainable practices in their daily lives.

“By reducing plastic waste, we are protecting our oceans, wildlife, and natural landscapes, and by choosing reusable options like our public water stations, we are promoting a healthier lifestyle and reducing our carbon footprint”, said Yousuf Lootah, Acting CEO of Corporate Strategy and Performance Sector, Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism.

Dubai Can promote a "refill culture" by providing clean and safe drinking water at all public water stations. The water is kept cool at 10°C, offering a refreshing alternative to single-use plastic bottles while adhering to the highest hygiene standards and regulatory requirements.

Dubai Can's success in reducing single-use plastic bottle consumption demonstrates the power of collective action in addressing environmental challenges. By encouraging individuals to make simple lifestyle changes, the initiative paves the way for a more sustainable and eco-conscious future in Dubai and beyond.
