Dubai: Recent reports have flagged a concerning uptick in chickenpox cases across the UAE, affecting both adults and children. As temperatures soar, healthcare professionals are sounding the alarm, urging residents to remain vigilant against this highly contagious viral infection.

Doctors in the UAE are witnessing a notable increase in the incidence of chickenpox, a contagious illness caused by the varicella-zoster virus. Characterized by symptoms such as fever, sore throat and a distinctive rash, chickenpox poses significant health risks, particularly during the summer months.

Chickenpox typically manifests with a fever and an itchy rash of fluid-filled blisters, which eventually form scabs. The virus spreads through person-to-person contact via airborne or droplet routes, with high contagion during close interaction. Patients become infectious 24-48 hours before the rash appears.

As summer approaches, several factors contribute to the surge in chickenpox cases. Increased outdoor activities and travel opportunities result in heightened social interaction, providing ample opportunities for the virus to spread. Moreover, school breaks and vacations lead to children spending more time together in close quarters, facilitating transmission.

Dr. Fiaz Ahamed, an Infection Control Physician at Thumbay University Hospital, highlights the seasonal dynamics of chickenpox transmission.

"The rise in chickenpox cases that have recently been reported in the UAE highlights concerns about reduced immunity and the extremely infectious varicella-zoster virus. The incubation period is 10-21 days, and patients become infectious 24-48 hours before the rash appears," said Ahamed.

Physicians express concerns about the potential impact of chickenpox on children, particularly in school and daycare settings where the virus can easily spread among susceptible individuals. Vigilance and preventive measures are crucial to mitigating the risk of outbreaks in these environments.

To safeguard individuals and foster herd immunity, healthcare professionals stress the importance of vaccination as a vital preventive measure against chickenpox. Promoting vaccination compliance and raising awareness about symptoms play a crucial role in early detection and effective management of cases.

Efforts to raise public awareness about chickenpox symptoms and preventive measures are imperative in curbing the spread of the virus. Timely detection and intervention can significantly reduce the impact of chickenpox outbreaks and protect vulnerable populations.
