Arab League launches second phase of campaign to protect children on social media
text_fieldsThe General Secretariat of the League of Arab States has launched the second phase of its campaign “Protecting Children on Social Media” under the slogan “Safe Internet for Our Children.”
The initiative was announced in partnership with the Arab Council for Childhood and Development, the UAE’s Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood, and UNICEF’s Regional Office during the 29th session of the Arab Childhood Committee, chaired by Djibouti and held online with the participation of representatives from national child protection bodies, civil society organisations and international institutions.
Reem Al Falasi, Secretary-General of the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood, said social media has become one of the most influential tools in shaping children’s behaviour and beliefs. She underlined the need for constant monitoring of the content children consume to protect them from extremist ideas, exploitation and harmful influences.
Al Falasi explained that the digital world is a double-edged sword. While online tools play a critical role in education and development, they also expose children to risks. She stressed that keeping children away from digital platforms is no longer possible, making it essential to establish safeguards that regulate use and shield them from physical, intellectual and behavioural harm.
She also highlighted the dangers of cyberbullying, fraud, data theft and digital addiction. She praised the campaign’s awareness content, which aims to strengthen resilience and encourage responsible use of technology while ensuring children grow up with strong values and protection from harmful ideologies.
As part of the campaign, five animated episodes titled “Alpha and Zein” have been produced in Arabic, English and French. The series follows the life of a modern family and delivers messages on positive internet use, digital ethics, artificial intelligence, prevention of cyberbullying and tackling social media addiction.
The episodes will be presented to the Council of Arab Information Ministers for wider distribution through official and private media outlets across the region, with the goal of raising awareness and encouraging the creation of educational digital content that safeguards children online.
