A new 900-metre tunnel has opened in Al Ain as part of the Dh185 million ($50.3 million) Zakher Intersection project, designed to cut travel times and improve mobility across the city.

The project, completed in 22 months, replaced an existing four-way roundabout with a three-lane tunnel in each direction. It aims to improve traffic movement along Hazza bin Sultan Street, a main route linking the northern and southern areas of the town centre.

The new intersection is expected to reduce congestion and shorten commutes for drivers coming from Zakher, Shiab Alashkhar, Shiab Al Watah and Ain Alfaydah.

“The new intersection reflects our commitment to developing world-class infrastructure across Al Ain region”, said Abdulla Al Amery, executive director at Al Ain City Municipality.

The project is part of broader development efforts in Al Ain. Last week, authorities completed the restoration of Al Ain Museum, which will reopen to the public on October 24.

Founded more than 50 years ago by UAE Founding Father, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the museum has been renovated to enhance the visitor experience and strengthen the city’s connection to its cultural heritage.
