The Department of Health, Abu Dhabi, has designated eight specialised Autism Spectrum Disorder diagnostic centres across Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and Al Dhafra.

The centres are intended to provide children and families with access to diagnosis and early support services through an integrated healthcare system, with a focus on early identification and timely intervention.

Authorities said the designation sets unified standards for autism diagnosis across the emirate and aims to reduce waiting times. Each centre is required to schedule an initial assessment within 14 days of receiving a referral or appointment request.

Children can be referred through multiple channels, including the Abu Dhabi Public Health Centre’s Well-Child visits programme, nurseries, schools and other healthcare facilities, or through direct bookings by parents.

Dr Fayeza Al Yafei, Executive Director of the Healthcare Quality Sector at the Department of Health, said the initiative establishes a consistent approach to autism diagnosis and supports clearer care pathways for families, with timely access to assessments.

The centres will operate under a model that links healthcare, education and community sectors, with coordination among stakeholders to support individuals with autism and their families throughout their care.

Officials said the facilities were selected through an evaluation process covering governance, leadership, workforce capability, clinical pathways, care processes, facility environment, family and community engagement, and data and quality systems.
