Saudi visitors can now open bank accounts using Visitor ID
text_fieldsThe Saudi Central Bank (SAMA) has introduced a new regulation permitting banks to accept the “Visitor ID” as an official document for opening accounts in the Kingdom.
The Visitor ID, issued by the Ministry of Interior, can be authenticated through authorized digital platforms. According to SAMA, the decision is part of ongoing efforts under Vision 2030 to enhance the visitor experience, support the tourism sector and expand access to digital financial services.
“This decision will enable banks to open accounts for new consumer segments and enhance the visitor experience during their stay in the Kingdom”, SAMA said in its announcement.
The central bank explained that the update follows its periodic review process to align policies with market developments. The change is expected to simplify account opening procedures, increase financial inclusion and strengthen the Kingdom’s digital banking transformation.
Through the update, visitors can now link bank accounts to their Visitor IDs, issued via the government’s “Absher” platform, enabling access to local mobile wallets and digital payment systems. This reduces reliance on cash and provides greater convenience for tourists, business travelers and pilgrims.
