Riyadh: Saudi Arabia's Transport General Authority (TGA) has issued new rules mandating taxi drivers to wear approved uniforms. The fresh rules came into force on July 12, Arab News reported.

The new rule was announced in May, and it applies to both men and women drivers of all kinds of taxis or ride-hailing services. The administration also warned of penalties for those who violate the rule.

The uniform rules mandate men to wear a national dress or a long-sleeved grey shirt, black trousers and a black belt. They could wear a jacket if required. Women are mandated to wear an abaya or a blouse and trousers with a jacket or coat. All taxi drivers must carry their ID cards.

The new rules emerge from the review process underway on regulations governing the transport sector. It also intends to enhance TGA's development initiative, increase the quality of transport services, the appearance of drivers and public-decency regulations.

TGA asked all drivers to visit its official website for full details on approved uniforms. It also asked passengers to alert it if the rules were not followed.
