Riyadh surgical team separates 53rd conjoined twins

Riyadh: A team of experts at a Saudi hospital has separated the conjoined twins who were attached at the hip. The babies also shared a spinal cord.
The surgical team of 28 consultants, specialists, and nursing and technical personnel worked for seven hours over seven stages on Thursday. The operation was carried out under directives from King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, reported Arab News. At the end of the surgery, experts examined the muscles and nerves of the twins to ensure their safety. Members of the medical team wished the babies a speedy recovery and expressed gratitude to royalty.
This is the 53rd operation under the Saudi programme to separate conjoined twins. Both babies were transferred to a children's ICU to remain under supervision for two days.
Dr. Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Al Rabeeah, the advisor at the Royal Court and Supervisor General of King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center (KSrelief), said his work reflects the ambitious vision led by the Crown Prince. He is also the head of the medical and surgical team for surgeries of separating Siamese twins. The Saudi Program is part of the Kingdom’s pioneering role in humanitarian and medical work.
In 32 years, the Saudi program has been able to treat 127 Siamese twins from 23 countries.
