Hajj 2025: 99 Indonesian pilgrims contract pneumonia, one dead

Ninety-nine Indonesian pilgrims performing Hajj in Saudi Arabia have been diagnosed with pneumonia, with one fatality confirmed, according to Indonesia's Ministry of Health.
Liliek Marhaendro Susilo, head of the Hajj Health Centre, announced the update on Thursday, as reported by Antara News Agency. The affected individuals are receiving intensive treatment at hospitals in Mecca and Medina.
Pneumonia, a lung infection caused by bacteria, viruses, or fungi, poses serious health risks during the Hajj season due to multiple compounding factors. Susilo attributed the rising cases to extreme desert temperatures reaching 47°C, physical exhaustion, overcrowding and underlying medical conditions among the pilgrims.
Although the Saudi government has not mandated the Pneumococcal vaccine, health authorities strongly advise vaccination for high-risk groups. These include pilgrims aged 65 and above, as well as those with chronic illnesses such as diabetes, cardiovascular and pulmonary conditions, liver or kidney disease and weakened immune systems.
The Indonesian health authorities are closely monitoring the situation and have urged pilgrims to remain vigilant, stay hydrated and seek medical attention promptly if symptoms arise.
