Kuwaiti Emir dissolves parliament, suspends some constitutional articles
text_fieldsHH the Emir Sheikh Mishal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah has ordered the dissolution of the National Assembly, along with the suspension of certain constitutional articles, for a period not exceeding four years. This decision comes amidst what the Emir described as “challenging times for the State of Kuwait, with far-reaching repercussions across various facets of life, leading to a negative reality.”
In his address to the nation, HH the Emir emphasized the responsibility entrusted upon the leadership to safeguard the state and its people.
“Unfortunately, we have faced some unimaginable, unbearable difficulties and impediments. Some people attempted resolutely to shut down every way out of the bitter reality. We were left with no option other than taking this hard decision to rescue the country and protect its higher national interests and resources of the nation,” HH the Emir explained.
Central to the Emir's decision is the imperative of maintaining the integrity of democratic governance. A democratic rule, he emphasized, “hinges upon the organization of state authorities and the distribution of roles in alignment with a clear vision for national objectives. Any breach of constitutional principles, therefore, risks undermining the foundational tenets of democracy and the rule of law.”
The Emir highlighted the detrimental impact of corruption on Kuwait's institutions and economy, stressing the need for comprehensive reform to address this scourge. In tandem with efforts to combat corruption and uphold justice, the Emir reaffirmed the utmost importance of national security.
The decision to dissolve the National Assembly and suspend certain constitutional articles stems from recognising that Kuwait's political landscape requires recalibration.
The powers of the National Assembly will be assumed by the Emir and the country's cabinet, state TV reported.
On Saturday, UAE President Sheikh Mohamed reached out to Kuwait's Emir over a phone call, expressing full support for the measures and decisions taken by Kuwait to uphold its stability.
