Malappuram: A 28-year-old woman was allegedly hacked to death by her mother-in-law following a dispute over serving tea at their home in Kerala’s Malappuram district on Monday, police said.

The incident occurred in the morning at Koottampara near Nilambur. The victim was identified as Rajila, wife of Sunil Babu, a local resident.

According to the police, the accused, Shanta (70), allegedly attacked her daughter-in-law with a machete after an argument broke out between them over serving tea.

Rajila sustained severe injuries in the assault. Her children were present in the house at the time and reportedly tried to stop the attack but were unable to prevent it, locals said.

Hearing the children’s cries, neighbours rushed to the house and took the injured woman to a nearby hospital. However, she later succumbed to her injuries, police added.

Rajila’s husband was reportedly not at home when the incident took place.

The accused was taken into custody and formally arrested after interrogation. Police have registered a case under Section 103(1) (murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, and further questioning is ongoing, they said.
