Woman goes into advanced labour; doctor delivers baby in car
text_fieldsKochi: Doctors at a private hospital in Kochi assisted in the delivery of a baby boy inside a car after a 21-year-old pregnant woman went into advanced labour moments after reaching the hospital on Sunday.
The woman had been travelling from Kannur to Aroor with her husband and her parents to attend a wedding. Though her due date was January 22, she began experiencing labour pains around 3 am and was first taken to a nearby hospital in Aroor, where she was given medication to slow the contractions.
As the pain intensified by about 8 am, the family rushed her to VPS Lakeshore Hospital in Kochi. Hospital authorities were alerted in advance, prompting emergency physician Dr Adil Ashraf to be present at the entrance. On examining the woman inside the car, the doctor found that the baby was already partially delivered, making it unsafe to move her inside the hospital.
Given the urgency of the situation, the medical team carried out the delivery at the spot to avoid potential complications, Dr Ashraf later explained, TNIE reported.
After the birth, the mother was shifted to the labour room for further care, while the newborn was admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit for monitoring. Hospital officials said both were stable and recovering well.
The woman's husband said the swift and decisive action of the medical staff was critical, adding that their timely intervention ensured the safety of both mother and child and expressing gratitude to the hospital team.
