Voting for BJP a waste; vote for Congress instead: Shashi Tharoor

Thiruvananthapuram: Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has said that voting for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Kerala would be a waste, arguing that the state’s electoral contest is primarily between the United Democratic Front (UDF) and the Left Democratic Front (LDF).

Speaking during the ongoing campaign for the Kerala Assembly elections, Tharoor maintained that voters seeking political change should support the UDF, positioning it as the only viable alternative to the ruling LDF. He emphasised that the BJP does not play a significant role in the state’s electoral dynamics, framing the election as a direct contest between the two dominant fronts.

Tharoor also indicated that public sentiment in Kerala reflects a desire for change, with the UDF focusing its campaign on capitalising on this mood. While he remains engaged in the state campaign, he noted that other party leaders are simultaneously handling election efforts in states such as Assam, West Bengal and Tamil Nadu.

On internal party matters, Tharoor clarified that discussions regarding the chief ministerial candidate are not a priority at this stage. He pointed to the Congress party’s established process of selecting a leader after the election, based on the views of elected legislators.

Additionally, he expressed confidence in UDF candidate K. Sabarinathan in the Nemom constituency. The Kerala Assembly elections are scheduled for April 9, with vote counting set for May 4.
