Severe blast at fireworks unit in Thrissur kills 6, ahead of Pooram
text_fieldsThrissur: A powerful explosion at a fireworks manufacturing unit in Thrissur has left at least six people dead and several others critically injured, just days before the annual Thrissur Pooram. The blast occurred at a facility in Mundathikode where fireworks materials were being prepared for the event, sending shockwaves across the region.
The accident took place inside a structure used for producing explosives for the Thiruvambady faction’s display. Workers present inside the unit at the time bore the full impact of the explosion. Many sustained severe burn injuries, with at least eight reported to be in critical condition. Victims were rushed to the Thrissur Medical College Hospital, where concerns remain that the death toll could rise further due to the seriousness of injuries.
The explosion ignited large quantities of stored materials, including high-intensity fireworks components such as amittu and gundu, triggering a chain reaction. The force of the blast completely destroyed the structure, reducing it to debris. Residents in nearby areas reported hearing the explosion from kilometres away, underscoring its intensity.
Rescue operations have been severely hampered as intermittent explosions continue at the site, creating dangerous conditions for emergency responders. Fire and rescue teams, along with police, are leading ongoing efforts to control the situation and search for victims.
Authorities have deployed expert teams to assess whether additional explosive risks remain in surrounding areas. Senior officials, including the district collector, are expected to visit the site as the scale of the disaster becomes clearer.
The incident has raised serious concerns over safety compliance, as fireworks preparation was underway at an accelerated pace ahead of Sunday’s festival. Police have launched an investigation into possible lapses that may have led to the deadly explosion, while uncertainty looms over how the tragedy will impact the Pooram celebrations.
