Rs75, 000 spent to cremate a body in Wayand disaster: shocking details emerge

Kochi: The details of government’s expenditure on landslide relief operations in Wayanad contain huge figures, sparking a controversy.

The affidavit filed by the government in the High Court shows that more money was spent on volunteers than on the victims.

It is reported that the government spent Rs 75,000 to cremate a dead body, splurging Rs 2.76 crore on 359 dead bodies.

Though the clothes for the affected people were collected from across the state, the report said Rs 11 crores was spent on the clothes for the camp inmates.

The allegations of inconsistencies in the report is becoming stronger in the wake of the release of report.

It is reported that the government spent 14 crores for the travel and food of the volunteers and army. The cost of operating generators at the relief camp was 7 crore.

A total of 2.98 crore was spent on providing user kits to the volunteers who came for relief work. It took Rs 1 crore for the construction of Bailey bridge.

Rs 17 crore was spent on air lifting helicopters for Indian Air Force. Rs 12 crore was given for the cost of vehicles used to evacuate the affected people.

Rs 15 crore was spent on accommodation facilities for military and volunteers and more important, the cost of food in the relief camp was Rs 8 crore.

The report further said that Rs 9 core was spent on medical examination and Rs 8 crore for drone and radar rental while it took Rs 3 crores for DNA test. There were about 4000 people in the relief camp.
