Onam and Milad processions converge in Palakkad, hailed as ‘real Kerala story’

Thiruvananthapuram: Onam festivities in Kerala on Friday turned into a memorable cultural spectacle at Yakkara-Murikkavu in Palakkad district, where a procession led by a Mahabali-clad participant was welcomed with ‘Duff’ drums by Madrassa students celebrating Milad-un-Nabi (Eid-e-Milad).

The unique convergence of processions, coinciding with Thiruvonam day and the Prophet’s birth anniversary, was described by many as the “real Kerala story”, a reference to the controversial film The Kerala Story.

As the Onam procession reached Murikkavu, accompanied by traditional ‘Chenda’ percussion, children from the local Juma Masjid joined in with their Duff drums, drawing cheers from the crowd.

“It was a great spectacle. I have not experienced such a delight in the last five years,” said Das Kalasala, who portrayed King Mahabali in the event.

Representatives of the Murikkavu Juma Masjid called it a strong message of harmony from Kerala to the world.

Onam, celebrated across communities, marks the annual homecoming of the mythical King Mahabali and is seen as a festival of equality and unity.

Extending greetings on Milad-un-Nabi, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said, “The ideals of equality and friendship are at the heart of the messages of the Prophet Muhammad. The memory of the Prophet gives us the energy to lead a happy social life with a high level of humanity. Let us work together to make this world more beautiful and a place where everyone can live together in harmony.”
