Kochi: Notorious burglar Bunty Chor, whose real name is Devendra Singh, was released from police custody on Monday evening after being detained overnight at the Ernakulam South Railway Station.

Bunty had been taken into preventive custody on Sunday night after police became suspicious of his presence and movements at the station, which were later confirmed through CCTV footage, the Ernakulam South Railway Police said.

During initial questioning, officers doubted the credibility of his statements and detained him for further verification. However, after detailed interrogation, the police concluded there were no signs of suspicious activity or criminal intent.

Bunty told authorities that he had come to Kochi to meet Advocate B.A. Aloor, citing a High Court order in his favour for the return of certain personal belongings—money and wristwatches—allegedly seized during his previous incarceration. He explained that upon reaching Ernakulam, he learned that Advocate Aloor had passed away earlier this year, leaving him unsure of his next steps before being detained.

Following his release, he reportedly visited Aloor’s office to seek further guidance. Police confirmed that Bunty currently has no active criminal cases in Kerala requiring detention.

Once widely feared for his ability to breach sophisticated security systems and execute daring thefts, Bunty Chor gained notoriety nearly a decade ago. Authorities said he was released only after verifying that his visit was linked to legal matters and involved no unlawful activity.

His brief detention sparked public interest given his criminal history.
