No more mutton or fish for prisoners; chicken and eggs proposed instead

Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala Jail Department has recommended completely removing mutton and fish from the diet of prisoners in the state, citing the high cost and health concerns associated with the current menu.
Jail Department chief has submitted the proposal to the Home Department, recommending that chicken and eggs be provided instead.
At present, prisoners are served mutton on Saturdays and fish twice a week. The department spends ₹5.72 crore annually on purchasing mutton and ₹4.8 crore on fish.
According to the department, replacing mutton with chicken could save ₹1.26 crore a year, while replacing fish with eggs could result in savings of ₹3.44 crore.
The proposed menu revision aims to protect prisoners' health while reducing the government's annual expenditure by crores of rupees. The Home Department is expected to take a final decision on the recommendation in the coming days.
