Misuse or wastage of drinking water now punishable, Minister

Thiruvanthapuram: Those who waste drinking water will have to face the music in the state.This comes close on the heels of the Centre's decision days ago.
Talking to MediaOne, K Krishnankutty, the minister of Kerala Water Resources said using running water for washing vehicles and clothes would be now on a punishable offence .
A team from Water authority has been tasked to conduct a study on the matter.
The Centre issued the notification as a part of its Jal Shakti Abhiyan project aiming at conserving underground water.
The punishment for offence is either 5 years imprisonment or a fine up to 1 lakh.
If repeated, the fine may be extended up to five thousand each day.
The notification issued by the Central Ground Water Authority (CGWA) comes under section 5 of the Environment protection act 1986.
The municipal corporation, water boards and authorities are advised to implement the law.
Around 60 crore Indians face water scarcity, where 4.84 crore cubic metres water is wasted every year.
