Migrant worker lynched in Palakkad on theft suspicion, five arrested

Palakkad: A mob killed a migrant worker in Palakkad district on Thursday suspecting him to be thief, The Indian Express reported.

The victim, identified as Ramnarayan Bhayar (31) hailing worker from Chhattisgarh, had been working at an industrial estate in Kanjikode here for the past one month.

Bhayar was assaulted at Attappallam village under the Walayar station limits after he was found wandering in the area and police have arrested five local persons in connection with the incident on charges of murder.

An officer reportedly said that Bhayar was mentally unstable and lost his way back to industrial estate where he was working, ‘By evening, he was spotted near a group of women engaged in work under the MGNREGS. When he started rummaging through one of their bags, in which they usually keep meals, these women raised an alarm. A group of young men, who were nearby, rushed to the spot and assaulted him’.

It is reported that no stolen material was recovered from him.

Local people alerted the police after the gang abandoned Bhayar who was later taken to the district hospital in Palakkad where he was declared dead.

Doctors said that Bhayar sustained multiple injuries causing profuse bleeding, which might have led to the death.

Police registered a case of murder under Section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

Five persons arrested in connection with the incident were identified as Murali, Prasad, Anu, Bipin and Anandan, all hailing from Attappallam village.
